I able to saturate a 10G network with rather inexpensive consumer grade hardware (Terramaster F6-424) running samba on TrueNAS scale. It may not be comparable, but I would find it very surprising if you would not be able to take TN to much greater speeds with professional hardware.

What NAS are you looking at? I only paid about €520 for my Terramaster F6-424, although I see the price has gone up a bit now. I would favour a low end NAS over most DAS, but at those prices I might favour a homebuilt PC NAS.

Unraid all the way. The Terramaster OS isnt that great. I have the F6-424 and the N95 cpu and 8GB of stock ram are just fine for Unraid. As for secure, you mean external access? Tailscale is your friend there. Don't open ports. Basically, the TM hardware is pretty good and the price of the F6 right

I had a f6-424 max that died, they had me do the same thing send it in. The only difference is they refunded the shipping via amazon reimbursement, and they had it here in three days. Maybe because I bought it through Amazon, I’m not sure. I did not contact Amazon for any of this, just Terramaster.
