Weekly Question Thread (aka Friday New Climber Thread). ALL QUESTIONS GO HERE

IMO, just get a Grigri. The Revo can be a little... contrived. Neither are "safer" than the other, both are assisted braking devices. Climbing accidents rarely come from any kind of equipment failure, it is far more likely to be from user error and complacency. Do partner checks, check your knots, t

How does this look for a beginer setup

I would recommend the petzl AM’D instead of the Freino. And just a personal preference, maybe a grigi instead of the Neox since they are more common.

Assisted belay device

For someone who is used to tube style devices, the Petzl Neox might be an interesting option.

GriGri vs. ClickUp: Why does the GriGri remain the default for beginners when the ClickUp feels more intuitive to me?

Personally, I prefer autotube-style devices (ATC Pilot, Mega Jul, Smart etc.) over the Grigri. The position for holding the device open is far more intuitive and also makes it easier to control the brake strand at the same time. I started with a Giga Jul (it's unfortunately very picky with ropes and

Bit peeved about the neox. I bought it because I have a thicker rope and wondered if it'd really work smoother than a gri-gri. It was amazing for a while, but now dirt has collected in the pulley and it is absolutrly useless. I'm back to using the gri-gri with the same rope. I understand that Petzl

How does this look for a beginer setup

Are you trying to spend as much money as you need to? Or are you trying to save money? What is your motivation? I would skip the Neox and ATC guide. Just get an ATC Pilot or Mammut Smart. As a beginner that will teach you a more fundamental skill for lead belaying across any device, be lighter weigh

Belay device recs

Get a petzl neox. It'll allow you to belay the same way you're used to with the ATC, with the added benefit of good assisted belaying.

What belay device should I get?

Think of the mechanism for a second (it's basically the same in both Grigri and Neox), what would cause it to trigger if the brake strand isn't being loaded during a fall? In Grigri it's friction inside the mechanism that can trigger it but they've practically removed that option with the Neox as th

What belay device should I get?

You need to try them out for yourself. It’s good to learn the basics on an atc and then move on to assisted breaking device imho Objectively the safest is probably the grigri but there is folks who just cannot get on with that device at all, I used to be in that cohort, took me ages to make friends
