DIY Unraid vs turnkey NAS in 2026: still worth the build?
You’re looking at a Synology with a Celeron CPU and 2GB of RAM vs 32GB of RAM and whatever CPU you put in and wondering why it costs more. If you just want storage and nothing else then Synology is probably all good. But if you want to run containers or anything other than basic storage then I would

DIY Unraid vs turnkey NAS in 2026: still worth the build?
Synology DS425+ Just a quick friendly reminder that Synology very recently attempted to lock down their ecosystem to "approved" HDDs sold directly through them and reneged only after intense backlash. I have no doubt they will attempt this again.

DIY or Prebuilt for first NAS? Looking for input and recommendations
Fair enough thanks. I don't think I'd have any major trouble with DIY, it's just more about learning the specifics of this world rather than an overall view on how the machine works. I did see the synology news - should I be concerned that they might try to soft launch the same or similar exclusivit

DIY or Prebuilt for first NAS? Looking for input and recommendations
I did see the synology news - should I be concerned that they might try to soft launch the same or similar exclusivity in future? I personally think they make the same mistake twice. Other people say that if they pulled that stuff once they'll do it again. So hard to say, but people left Synology fo

First NAS for photos/video, Plex/Jellyfin, remote access & multi-user — 2-bay vs 4-bay advice?
Consumers lashing back. They did two things anti consumer. 1.) Forced the use of their approved hard drives (now reversed) 2.) removed the drivers for the integrated graphics in the DS225+ and DS425+ so there is no hardware transcode which it sounds like you’ll need. I’m in the same boat as you; res

Need a local backup for 10tb of personal data. What would you do if you were me?
If you want an easy plug and play solution, with minor work, reliable and that doesn't need much time to setup, get a Synology NAS. One with an Intel CPU, and 8GB of ram, anything with AMD and ARM CPU is to be strongly avoided. Then if you think, you would need more than 10TB in the future, a 4 bay

Is building a custom NAS with Unraid or True NAS worth it over pre build solutions, and if yes, how to do it?
Just a heads I'd stay away from Synology, they are currently deep into their enshittification Era. 1st they are forcing people to buy they're branded drives and 2nd Nas Campares just posted this video:Synology Kills Graphics Drivers and HEVC & H.264 HW Transcoding on the J4125 NAS (DS225+ & DS425+)
