"dont buy a gaming headset, buy quality headphones and a standalone mic" they said?!

When they say "Don't buy a gaming headset, buy a quality headphone and a standalone mic" they are typically referring to something wired and passive, such as the Sennheiser HD 550 or the HD 490 Pro. You get much lower latency, and much better sound quality for gaming than the typical choices. Though

Can we finally adress this issue please ?!

I only get the crackle sometimes on the spawn screen. Something is definitely off with the audio. In beta you could pinpoint enemies through sound. Now it's really hard to tell. I use the sennheiser HD 490 pro which are excellent for gaming.

HD 490 PRO or HD 660S2

I actually own both. Short answer: the HD 490 Pro is way more versatile. Comfort is the first big difference. The 490 has larger and deeper cups, lighter clamp, and just more space in general. For long sessions, especially with bigger ears, it’s noticeably easier to live with. Sound-wise, the 660S2

Where do you feel the HD 490 pros fall against the 600 series?

Top of the pops for me: https://daemonxar.com/2025/12/20/the-sennheiser-hd-490-pro-my-new-reference-open-back-a-warning-shot-at-sonova-both/#value-comparisons I very slightly prefer the tuning on the 6XX or 660S2, but between the better soundstage, comfort, and versatility it's a pretty easy call fo

Headphone question

I love my audio set up, I can hear footsteps and distant gunfire well and it's easy to distinguish between the various ambient creaking noises and player footsteps. It's overkill for gaming, Soundblaster AE-9 sound card and Sennheiser HD 490 Pro headphones. I had a custom balanced mini XLR to 1/4" c

What headset is better for gaming?

I own the HE1000se and all I do is game on it. I had the Sennheiser HD 490 Pro and the HD 800 S as well. Those were great for gaming and especially the 800 S for competitive play. But the HE1000se, once I picked those up, I knew I’d never pick up my Sennheisers again. They are amazing! Basically the

IEMs

I prefer my open back headphones for FPS gaming. It opens up the soundstage dramatically over my Truthear Pure IEMs. I just recently upgraded to a pair of Sennheiser HD 490 Pro headphones, and the audio has so much more detail, even more than my old DT 900 Pro x headphones.

What headset is better for gaming?

I can't say for sure which headphones are best for you and your budget, but I did just go through a very similar situation. I wanted a new pair of headphones (coming from the HD600's which I found lacking for games but still smooth for music) to give me the best desktop gaming audio experience. This

Updated battle station for 2026

It’s the Sennheiser HD 490 Pro. These are the most comfortable headphones I have used and are really good for gaming, especially FPS. The imaging is great even without EQ

Need Mid-High End Headphone Advice!

There is no official "best" headphones or even "top 5" headphones below $600. Such a thing does not exist for everyone and every taste :) Personally, I prefer the new HD 550 over the HD 560S, to just name one example. I also had the Edition XS and found it to be pretty good but it did not wow me - i
