Black Diamond ATC Pilot or Gri Gri for a beginner?
Most of the comments thus far aren’t aware of the differences between a standard ATC, and an ATC Pilot. You can’t go wrong with a grigri or Pilot but the Pilot is the better option for most first devices IMO. Unless you’re gifting it to someone. My recommendation is not as a former Black Diamond rep

Underrated Climbing Brands
Mad Rock for shoes Organic for Crash pads if you can afford it Wild Country - Friends, Nut tool (theirs has the leash and that has saved my ass repeatedly), their rope bag/tarp combo has got to be my favorite on the market but that that's just me. DMM - Offset Nuts Edelrid - Ohmega, Bulletproof HMS

Weekly Question Thread (aka Friday New Climber Thread). ALL QUESTIONS GO HERE
You don't need a stainless steel carabiner to belay. Mammut sells a locker that matches the Smart, just buy that one.

New Belay Device for Top Roping
As someone who has a gri gri and doesn't use it much, I still think that if you're asking something as broad as "What belay device should I get?" And your input is essentially, "Yeah, idk man, just want something besides my ATC!" The answer is pretty much always gonna be a gri gri because in reality

Weekly Question Thread (aka Friday New Climber Thread). ALL QUESTIONS GO HERE
If you only ever plan to do single pitch climbing with anchor hardware, it's fine. Very similar to the Ederlid Jul2, Ocun Bow, and Mammut Smart. However Petzl Grigri or Edelrid Pinch are better at locking off the rope if your partner is projecting and hanging lots, or if you have a weight difference

Using the Ultra as God (aka. Tim Cook) intended
It works great. Replace the Mammut Smart 2.0 with the GriGri+ and you’ll get how I use it. I rappel down the tree with it. Is it the intended use? No but it’s a common practice with those who hunt from a saddle

Looking for gear
Black Diamond sells full kits for rope climbing if you're looking for a bundle. Also, trust me on this, you probably want to get some loose powder chalk and a chalk bag if your area allows it. Still use the liquid chalk, but for the price and how quickly it runs out you'll save money in the long run

I’m curious about everyone’s opinions on ATC belaying — either using one yourselves or being belayed with one.
I always sing the praises of my Mammut smart alpine. It's the twin tube version, and it's been with me on more pitches than anything else. It is pickier about rope sizes, but as a single device for everything, it can't be beat. It has the smoothest rappel action and the smoothest belay action. One t

Which belay device should I go for?
I love my mega jul it’s the most versatile device I’ve ever had. My go to outside of gym. I used mammut smart 2.0 recently too. It’s very nice but not as versatile. I primarily like the thumb loop better and more comfortable than mega jul. I’d continue using it for the gym.
