Hey /r/Sysadmin! What do you use for your home router? 2026 Edition

Early in my career I made sure I had ethernet ran to every room, had a PIX firewall in my basement, had a torrent server running, etc. Now? I just use Google Nest Wifi connected directly to the ONT and spread a few extra mesh units around the house. No need to make anything complex.

Google nest mesh or something else?

Forget the Google crap. It’s garbage. Take that $300 and put it towards a UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra, a Lite 8 PoE switch, and a U6+ AP. You’ll only spend just a little more than the Nest WiFi Pro, and it’s a system that you’ll actually be pleased with. Bonus, you’ll have room for expansion later - j

How I Improved my Google Home Experience

For those not interested in a wall of text. TL;DR:After years of unreliable performance with smart home devices—including disconnecting speaker groups, Nest cameras dropping, and general network instability—you replaced your Nighthawk + extender setup with Nest WiFi Pro, only for it to get even wors

I don't care how much it costs, what is the best wifi in 2025

It’s very unclear what your problem is. The most important question: If you’re hardwired to your Ethernet jack (where the internet in the house comes in), is the internet reliable? If no, investigate different providers. Sonic or MonkeyBrains are probably the best in SF, if they’re available to you.

On sale at Costco

I have it. Speeds are great. Seamless roaming does not work as well as the Google Nest WiFi 5 system it replaces however.

Solved the constant drop-outs after years of frustration

It's strange that people have polar opposite experiences with Google's Wifi routers, something is going on My Nest Wifi has been solid for 5 years I had it, though it is a single unit, no mesh.

For the internet tech savvy folk. Help needed.

Get a mesh wifi system. Any will do. I use Google Nest simply because it ties in to my other Google devices and also functions as a speaker.

Whats a brand no one will convince you is good?

Their app is trash. I bought into the environment as much as I could. Thermostats, home minis, the big Google Home clock, Nest wifi.... I hate their Home app with a burning fiery passion. It's confusing, unintuitive, and is so simplified that it's basically good for nothing. I dumped the last of my

Google wifi 6e

Are any of your 45 connected devices near one of your pods so that you might connect them by ethernet? I recommend sorting that out (and buying some cheap unmanaged switches if you need multiple devices to be fed by a single pod) and then re-testing your phone's download speed. If you can get everyt
