X1 Carbon Gen 6 Lifespan in 2026

New battery should help for sure! I don't fully/really know what "newer" ("less than 20 year old") thinkpads are like w/re battery longevity. For me on my Latitude 7490 and 7200 2n1 they each have some minor problems but aren't to the point of being unusable yet. I would expect "warning signs" befor

Y is the T490 so praised

There was a really good write-up recently on "ThinkPad as a cultural phenomenon" here: The Myth of the ThinkPad – Innovintage TL:DR business computers in general are almost always a good deal used because they're good, well-built machines that get sold off before they are actually done. In the case

I need a laptop for offshore work

Where's home? If you're living/buying from the USA, cross-shop Dell and HP, they're usually cheaper for similar/better build quality and often newer generations of hardware incl. better batteries. (And further: Because ThinkPads are an influencer meme many models simply cost up to 2x more than equiv

T480 or T14 or ... ?

Either should be fine. If the TrackPoint isn't a hard requirement you could also get away with a similar Dell Latitude (7490/7400) for cheaper. Or, step down to an E480/L480 or Latitude 5490/5400. I'm personally using a Latitude 7490 with i5-8250U, 16GB of RAM, and a 256-gig SSD for all my personal

Shoddy little brainfuck compiler in C

At any given time I'm running a pair a systems: a media-oriented desktop (Windows) and a developer-oriented laptop (Linux, until recently). The desktop has a 4k screen, nice speakers, discrete GPU, and I use it for all video (from YouTube to feature films), music, and games (GOG, Steam). Thanks to w

recommend a Linux ThinkPad for web browsing and Libre Writer for the next few years

For sure! In terms of support on an ThinkPad X1 Carbon (6th Gen), it's already the oldest most people recommend for daily use and that model is just on the inner edge of 9 years old. I personally bet I could get another 3-5 years out of my Dell Latitude 7490 but I've been poking around for something

My dad said if i manage to do a Hackintosh

Just bought a Dell Latitude 7490 and hackintoshed it without a single issue. There are pre-built EFIs and you don't have to worry about anything. Just install itlwm and HeliPort and you'll have WiFi, or buy a compatible broadcom card to have native internet + Bluetooth + airdrop work.
