This may be a bit of a rant but here’s my perspective: The product XTEINK are busy selling is a small e-ink screen, not a book reader. The device is really cool because it’s minimalistic and pocketable but in order to be a book reader it lacks: decent epub rendering capability: it improved recently

Not sure why people rave about the Xteink X4. It's an interesting enthusiast's device, but it doesn't even have a frontlight. I wouldn't recommend it as Baby's First E-Reader. Seconding the posts suggesting looking at second-hand readers - e-readers have fragile screens but otherwise it’s tech that holds up well, so a second-hand Kindle or Kobo or PocketBook that is in a decent shape (the screen is intact) will be fine for this purpose. You can adjust text size, spacing and fonts but it's not as easy as with other readers. You have to use a separate Software on a computer to do that. Search for XTEink Toolkit.

There are reasons why most e-readers don't have glass screens... Reflections and worse light diffusion even when matte, weight, comprised contrast being some of them. Stupid idea IMO. It's not even that I don't care - I specifically don't want this in my device given the drawbacks it would ensure. P
