All fixed - I contacted Asustor who were very helpful. Update: I did test successfully with 6x Lexar NM790 4TB (after having issues with the WD Red SN700 and after having received a replacement unit from beelink - beelink tested those drives successfully according to their reply here, so very likely my first unit was defective).
