My DXP 4800 Pro just arrived 😍
Congratulations - even the Pro Version. Great future proof pick! Out of the box my DXP 4800 Plus was very loud when hard disk was working. You can add some rubber (or silicon feet) on the bottom - https://www.amazon.de/dp/B0CVHCXYK3 Replace the Fan with a Noctua - https://www.amazon.de/dp/B07655KF5C

So it begins.
I’ve got this, and got my gf the DXP2800. The DXP4800 Plus is solid. It looks great, performs well. I originally got it with the plan to run Unraid but the UGREEN software has been fine for what I’m doing, so stuck with it. Even the UGREEN mobile app is good.

Starting a homelab, not sure which NAS to get
If you’re gonna pick a prebuilt then get the UGREEN. You can install other operating systems if you want like windows, Linux, truenas, and unraid. The hardware is far more powerful and the build quality is better than Synology (aluminum vs plastic). Plus Synology has made some questionable choices i

To former Synology User: any regrets after switching to Ugreen?
I went from a Synology DS1621+ to a uGreen DXP4800 Plus. Quick review on the uGreen : Hardware is great, software sucks. If the Synology software is a 100, the uGOS software is a 20. So, I installed Unraid on it and have been real happy with it.

DXP4800 Plus drive and upgrade advice
I’m running a DXP4800 Plus fully built out, so here’s some real-world feedback. Drives: 12TB is a solid starting point, but if budget allows, bigger drives age better. I’m running 4×24TB WD Red Pro and noise/heat are totally manageable with the stock chassis (I did swap to a quieter fan). In practic

Noctua NF-B9 redux installed
I just stuck a P14 Pro in my DXP4800+ and wow does that move more air. Its like twice as much air coming out between the drive slats.

CM846 4 bay DAS expansion
It hasn’t been released so afaik we don’t know a whole bunch of how exactly it works. It is their first DAS so 🤷🏻♀️ based on my experience with the dxp4800+, I assume it’ll work pretty well and it might be missing a few features that will get added with updates.

PC recommendations to turn into a server
You didn't mention budget but if you are going for new: Have you looked at something like a UGREEN NAS - these come with 6 core 12th gen intel chips whose iGPU supports INtel Quicksync for all your hardware transcoding needs:https://nas.ugreen.com/products/ugreen-nasync-dxp4800-plus-nas-storage?from

Buy Once, Cry Once NAS
Just a couple of notes personal opinion, Plex is SHIT go with jellyfin. You don't want to pay subscription, but you want to pay 750 dollars to unlock features you already have for free on jellyfin? It doesnt makes sense to me -ugreen Nas are reaaally good and they come with nice hardware for your us

Looking for a quiet, low-power NAS (2-4 bay) for photo library and working over network
If you can, put the NAS in a separate room from your work space to solve the noise. Been using a Ugreen DXP4800 Plus myself. Works great for me. I have a 125h/32gb/1512gb server for tasks like transcoding, and i have my Nvidia PC for hard work like locally ran LLM's. Both connect to the NAS over LAN
