Top switch is sx3008, all other switches are sg3* series. None support OSPF in controller mode, nor am I interested in doing it on the switches at this point. It works on the er8411 in stand alone mode, why has tp-link not incorporated it in controller mode?

Nope, not accurate. I have an OC300 paired with an ER8411 (top most powerful router). tp-link even confirms in multiple places that none of the routers can do it in controller mode, but gives no reason why this limitation.
