Best NAS system to run Plex for a budget
Since this is your first NAS - you really can’t beat Synology for the user interface and final product polish. It’s so easy to set up a caveman could do it (me). I am in a similar boat to you (NAS newbie) and have the DS224+ and it’s excellent. Perfect for my needs.

[System Agnostic] Foundry VTT on a Synology DS423+
I’ve run it on a DS224+ with only 4GB of RAM and it ran fine. The server has very little demand for computing power. It’s the clients (via a web browser) that needs the “oomph”. I wasn’t a savvy Docker user back then and had some trouble getting a network volume to mount to that Docker Container, so

MyCloud Replacement
I had a 4tb MyCloud for years, even replacing its internal drive with a 10tb WD Red drive, and connecting external USB drives to it. It's 100mbps network connection was making it feel slow. I replaced it with a Synology DS224+ early last year and I'm completely happy with it. Was more expensive at a

Looking to upgrade from Synology DS223j
If you liked Synology, just upgrade within it. Something like Synology DS224+ is a big jump from the j-series—way faster and actually smooth for photos. If you’re open to switching, TerraMaster is cheaper and faster, but Synology still wins on apps/ease.

Best/safest remote access
synology vs alternatives: ugreen is newer/cheaper but the software ecosystem is still maturing. qnap has more features but the ui is clunkier. for a family thats not super tech savvy, synology's polish is worth the premium imo. synology photos has an ios app that auto-uploads in background - works s

Begynder NAS

3. En enhet att spel

Advice on setup
I started the same way as you did about a decade ago.. ITX MB, small CPU, couple of disks.. But soon I've soon realised it's much simpler to buy readymade NAS. Anything exposed to the internet 24/7 I know I cannot protect as good as any decent company. If you give it some thought, they will save you
