Synology vs alternatives for a first, family-friendly NAS – worth it?

It all depends on what you are wanting to do. While there are a lot of people that have shunned Synology, it is still a solid ecosystem and very reliable/stable. My DS1019 has been running steady since I got it. I'm also considering getting another Synology to keep the ecosystem and demote the 1019

Which 4 bay again?

The overall best two Synology models to consider that are 4 bay and decently priced, with good overall options, would be the DS925+ and the DS923+. The DS925+ would rank as better imo because it's newer. Otherwise both have similar specs. For example, the DS925+: CPU: AMD Ryzen V1500B 4-core 2.2 (ba

What good NAS can I buy?

I've set up NAS boxes for a lot of people over the years, so here's what I'd recommend: If you're on a tight budget (~$300):UGREEN DH4300 Plus. Yeah, it's ARM, but hear me out—I was skeptical too until I deployed like a dozen Docker containers on it. Thing runs surprisingly stable. Way better than t

Does UNAS Offer Bitrot Protection?

As an aside to your comment about Synology being "overpriced"... A DS925+ is $640. A UNAS Pro 4 is $500. I'd argue that the Synology brings a hell of a lot to the table for that extra $140 that the UNAS does not. The only thing the UNAS has that the Syno does not is the 10GB ports.

Hilfe ich bin in Vereins-"IT" reingerutscht

When will UNAS Pro 4 be released?

I would try an inexpensive Synology device, like a DS925+, filled with a 2 NVME disks and 10GBe interface, and see if that meets expectations. You could also add 4 SATA SSDs to the mix. Another choice might be a purpose made flash device, like the https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1773205-REG/a

looking for a NAS

What you worried about only influenced the newest Synology product like DS425+, DS925+. Now they have changed their policy to save their business. No offense, I think it’s better for you to buy a second-hand Synology product like DS218j/219j/220j/221j/222j if you just need 4TB storage. I think Synol

Ugreen NAS for Family Back Up

I ended up ordering the Synology DS925+ instead of the Ugreen. Mainly due to security concerns and software maturity. To me, seems worth the extra $150-200 upfront. We’ll see how it goes when I get it

im thinking of getting a nas or JBOD how much storage should i get

So would you wanna/need to tinker by building your own nas system (for example unraid) or rather have a ready piece of hardware like a Synology nas? You can start smallish with a 4 bay unit, so still be able to add additional drives as you go along (for synology choose the flexible shr1 raid). And i
