Unless you want resell the Synology device... Then yes move all drive to R740xd. But if you think to keep the DS1520+ as backup or "2nd nas/server" then add new hard drives to R740xd. Need NAS advice: Should I build my own or buy a pre-built one?
I built my own Synology DS1520+ and and extension unit as well. Total 10 -16TB drives. It’s been a great learning experience. Now I’m pretty addicted. I run a plex, prologue, and kavita servers for the family. Plus a photo cloud service. I would recommend doing it yourself.
