Fed up with Google Drive, looking to build a home server for photo backup

I’ve been using a Synology DS1019+ (5-bay and ability to expand to another 5) for the past 6 years. I primarily use it for 45GB of Plex media on a SHR (Synology’s RAID with 1-drive fault tolerance). I disliked their photo implementation a few years back and haven’t tried it since. My trouble was tha

Stupid question

I’m running a Synology DS1019+ NAS, with 5 Seagate Ironwolf 10TB drives. It’s designed for 4K streaming/transcoding. I run Plex, Surveillance Station, store all my movies, TV shows, backup all my music, photos, and PC backups. It’s been running since Feb. 2019, 24/7, without issues. It even emails m

Need help setting up Plex for best quality - powerful PC but total beginner

Its not all about your server. You can have a low-powered system serve 100% quality. They key to that are your clients being able to play the media natively. Transcoding is not only a performance hit - its a loss of quality do to the on-the-fly lossy conversion. So, you want to inventory your media

Jellyfin can't play 4k movies anymore on synology NAS

I think your problem is with the client. You need to get the client to somehow force direct play. I was having this problem on a Roku TV that suddenly stopped allowing direct play after an update and my Synology (DS1019+) could not handle it. I was already switching to an Apple TV so never resolved

Would you give up on running Plex altogether, or ditch the mini PC idea and just deal with

Do what works best for you - but always try to keep in mind what you might need to do to scale. I run Plex on a Synology DS1019+. Its been perfect for my group of 3 users. All our playback clients are flavors of Android: Nvidia Shield Google Chromecast with Google TV Samsung Galaxy phones When it co

What do you run Plex on?

I run Plex server on a Synology DS1019+ NAS, with five Seagate Ironwolf 10TB drives that I bought in 2018, running over a gigabit network. Runs flawlessly. I use the Plex client on my Samsung 65” TV, on Roku Ultra 4K in the bedroom on a monitor, (also from 2018) from a web browser on my desktop PC,

Synology Nas , Nvidia Shield or minipc for Plex server?

I’ve been running the Plex server on a Synology 5-bay DS1019+, upgraded from a 2-bay unit. No transcoding, no blips, no hiccups, no issues since 2018. That’s my only experience, so I recommend it.

Synology Nas , Nvidia Shield or minipc for Plex server?

It depends on your load. It depends on your clients and the needs for transcoding. Without that information, we cant properly advise you - except in vague terms and concepts. From least powerful to most powerful, it will be: Shield, Synology, Minipc (depending on what you mean by minipc). I personal

Currently what are the best mini pc's to get for a Plex server? (for 1 user)

They aren’t meant for transcoding. If you need to transcode stuff, then you need the right equipment for that. Even an old DS1517+ could direct play 4K no problem. Some older Synology systems have CPUs that can hardware transcode a few streams with no issues. I know someone with a DS1019+ that has t

I mean I knew it was gonna be bad, but wtf?!

I dunno. Old Synology DS1019+ and using my S25 Ultra I just tested (because I don't stream mobile often) and one of my folders has over 1000 movies and it loaded in under 2 seconds, probably closer to 1 second. I get your complaints but the Android app works fine for me. YMMV
