How I Bought Almost All of My Mountaineering Gear For Under $700

Hey man don't buy the atc-xp, get the guide version (petzl reverso, atc guide or similar). It's only a few $ more.

New grivel crampon straps

Yeah man you need actual straps. The whole point of a C3 crampon, considering your Katahdin project is a summer hike just with snow on it that would work fine with nontechnical, is ease of use. If you start fiddling with a Paracord monstrosity, that ease of use is lost. But you don't need to buy the

30 m tagline that’s usable alone?

I’ve rapped on the petzl purline a bunch. I use a grivel scream and an autoblock and it is great. You could also use a reverso and stuff both strands through one slot and add a second locking carabiner

Best equipment for new climbers

Do the course with rental gear. You’ll be rough on equipment the first time round, better put that wear and tear on the rental gear. Research about the different categories of shoes, axes, harnesses etc. and think about what you want to do and which category of gear fits best without looking at bran

How do you adjust to belaying at new gyms?

What the effing heck is that belay set up?Holly hell, who thought it was a good idea to actively work against setting up people to not fail outside of that weird set up.I'm pretty sure Petzl would be against belayers keeping both hands above the device at all time. If there's one thing I'm always te

Advice after top-rope belaying/lowering accident?

belay gloves / assisted braking device (grigri, pilot, giga jul) and you will be totally fine also consider thickness of rope vs size of atc. some are super wide and thinner ropes fly through (BD ATC), some are really skinny (e.g. Petzl reverso) and thick ropes will be almost jammed in there in your

Weekly Question Thread (aka Friday New Climber Thread). ALL QUESTIONS GO HERE

The more force claim is usually based on Petzl's Reverso vs Grigri measurements, and the difference is big for high factor falls. But anybody who's seriously contemplating routes where a FF 1 onto a micro is a real possibility doesn't need reddit to tell them how to belay.

Rate my trad rack, Finally laid everything out on the tarp… now I just need to actually go climbing

Are you talking about the blue belay device on a BD gridlock locker, between the ATC guide and grigri? If so that is a first generation Petzl Reverso belay device. It was one of the first widely accepted plaquette style belay devices and worked well. The issue is that the metal plate it was stamped

Kia Ora! I Thought it might be a good Idea (if its okay to post this here) to ask people who know more than me about what I might want to get for my brother as a mountaineering gift.

I see he's trying to create a haul system (for crevasse rescue I suppose). Instead of using the Petzl Reverso, you can get him a Petzl Microtraxion or Edelrid Spoc and add a Petzl Tibloc. Also, please tell him he shouldn't put the knot of the yellow/red rope in the prusik knot.

What is the best belay device for a left-handed 13 year old?

I often switch my hand when belaying so can do left or right. I have a petzl reverso- but any tube device is good for either hand. For an auto locking device I use a click up. It’s effectively the same action as the tube devices and isn’t handed for left or right.
