I improved my monitoring situation, mixing is way easier and now I’m finding most plugins useless.
I dispute that it takes $6k. Neumann KH80 are all you need for a home studio desk setup. Other similar ones are the Genelec SAM monitors. Pretty much any system that is associated with a DSP system will get you there. As far as why the HS aren’t as performant, it comes down to the same few metrics:

Kali In-5 Vs Neumann KH80
ngl i've used both in untreated rooms and the kh80 are way more honest but brutally revealing. kali in5 are fun and forgiving for heavy bass music. if your room isn't treated, the kh80's ma1 calibration kit works magic - measures your room and adjusts the speakers. Neumann MA 1 comes as a bundle wit

Time to upgrade monitors…want better mid range detail
Neumann KH150 + MA1 ; slightly over budget but quality and imo by far the best in this price range/class. Will obviously not sound like ATC, only ATCs will - the neumanns are more linear. Edit: I have the KH310 + KH750 + MA1. I’ve been to many (high end) studios and my setup punches far above its we

KH80s are amazing speakers at their size but are by no means enough on their own or without a sub for professional mixing and mastering. As a secondary alternate pair to a larger speaker there’s few choices better than kh80’s. But on their own, sorry they are not going to expose details in a mix lik

Speaker Question / Looking for Sound Quality
Kali LP6v2 is good, as is the JBL 308. Personally, I'd recommend the Neumann KH80 with bonus points for MA-1 included. For headphones, some Linsoul x Crinacle Zero IEMs are fantastic for $25. Speakers are a tricky subject, but the bottom line is that you can apply EQ with a bit of technical knowledg

Opinions on Adam Audio D3V for production/mixing/mastering?
Thanks for sharing that, thats quite interesting to hear. A pair of Neumann KH80 would be amazing as I’ve used them in the past at my friend’s studio. They’re twice my current budget though so its a bit out of reach. Someone in the comments here suggested Kali LP6V2 so I’m doing some research on the

Has anyone else got disappointed in music after you went hi-fi?
I distinctly remember getting my first discman with clip-on Sony headphones, listening to a hiphop CD and wondering why the kickdrum was obscuring the bass, if that was a mistake, deliberate choice, or unavoidable. I have always analyzed music for how it sounds, couldn't help it, so I was naturally

Small room / desk against wall — which speakers/monitors should I buy?
Of the speakers you mentioned, I would probably advise against any rear-ported speakers like the T5V or HS5 - though I am a total Adam fan. I would suggest to check out the Adam D3V or IK Multimedia iLoud micromonitor. I believe they are in your budget and come with built in DSP for room correction.

We can talk anecdotes and opinions all day. If you look at the EBU Tech paper section 2.2, they specify to 40 Hz. The KH80 is -4 dB at 55 Hz. So granted, they don’t quite get there, but I’ll say that even 60 Hz plus some headphones is sufficient. https://tech.ebu.ch/docs/tech/tech3276.pdf https://ww
