i just looked into buying a minisforum ms-a2 barebones (i.e no ram, no nvme) but the pre-built ones were cheaper than I could source, even taking into account that they pre-built ones included a wasted windows oem licence.

You are missing the point too. OP bought the hardware last summer. He had the PC for nearly a year before noticing that one of his SFP+ ports were defective. Nearly one year. Within that year the global prices for DDR5 RAM skyrocketed, making his PC much more valuable. This was caused by the market,

Comparativo de routers Wi-Fi (2026): qual vale realmente a pena?
Para ir pelo caminho do MiniPC, eu tenho um Minisforum MS-A2 com duas SFP+ que já me senti tentado a meter como router BSD, está subaproveitado. (não é barato) Para 1Gbps, bastava fazer passthrough do controlador das NICs SFP+ para uma VM. Já pensei na hipotese, e deixar o Mercusys a fazer só wifi.
