Using the Ultra as God (aka. Tim Cook) intended

It works great. Replace the Mammut Smart 2.0 with the GriGri+ and you’ll get how I use it. I rappel down the tree with it. Is it the intended use? No but it’s a common practice with those who hunt from a saddle

Which belay device should I go for?

I love my mega jul it’s the most versatile device I’ve ever had. My go to outside of gym. I used mammut smart 2.0 recently too. It’s very nice but not as versatile. I primarily like the thumb loop better and more comfortable than mega jul. I’d continue using it for the gym.

which belay device to use?

I'll toss in my vote for the mammut smart 2.0. It's cheap compared to grigri money, and not because it isn't durable or well made. Put the money saved towards a belay class at a local gym, or through a local guide in your area. I belay with one, lead and top-rope, indoor and outdoors, and have been

Megajul

Like mine as an allrounder. I prefer belaying lead with the Mammut Smart (2.0 with Smarter add-on), and bringing up a second with a Reverso. But the convenience of bringing only 1 device for lead/second belaying + rappelling and that device even having the safety reserve of semi-auto locking makes i
