Belay device recs

I like the mammut smart 2.0. I think it's normally 50 bucks, but REI has it on sale etc. It has no moving parts in it but uses an interior pinching surface that interfaces with the rope and caribiner to assist lock if the rope starts feeding too quickly (someone is falling). With a single mechanism

Belay carabineer

Yeah, silly me for not mentioning my belay device. I use Mammut Smart 2.0, from the manual it says: "To guarantee optimum functioning of the Smart 2.0, the use of a Smart HMS or a similar symmetrical, round-profile HMS carabiner is recommended." What bothers me here is the phrase "symmetrical, round

Belay carabineer

I use a smart alpine, which is a twin-tube version of the Mammut Smart. There is an odd motion that you can do where the curve of the belay biner can bind in the device, locking it up and preventing rope from traveling in either direction in it. I think it is better to have the wider belly, as well

Gyms Worldwide Increasingly Ban Tube-Style Belay Devices in Favor of ABDs

Look up the Mammut Smart 2.0. It functions like an ATC but has assisted breaking.

which belay device to use?

Mammut Smart 2.0 is really nice for single pitch sport, much easier to feed slack for lead belay compared to a grigri and the assisted breaking bites very hard like a grigri. I know people will say that it’s fine to lead belay with a grigri, but the safe way (without disengaging the cam) is very fin

Carabiner for ATC Pilot?

Hi! I personally use theOcun HMS Condor Screw but one that I liked a lot (and 3 person that I know have) is the Mammut Smart HMS 2.0 screw. Is impossible to make a mistake because the system of it doesn't allow you to use it if you don't set it correctly. It's totally fools proof, hence, it's good f

Wildcountry Movement Belay Device experiences

Meh, I’ve belayed with most of the devices on the market and as far as non-mechanical assisted braking devise my favorite is the Mammut Smart 2.0. I haven’t used the new WC yet. I love edelrid gear and but think the Jul is only ok, definitely not the best. Im certainly not an “ignorant new guy”.

Black Diamond ATC Pilot or Gri Gri for a beginner?

late to the convo but you made the right decision. I never had a Pilot but I have used the Mammut Smart 1.0/2.0 for many years (same thing really). I belayed with an ATC for years before getting the Smart. Grigris just never seemed to be worth the price (vs your basic ATC). today, the plethora of ve

Like mine as an allrounder. I prefer belaying lead with the Mammut Smart (2.0 with Smarter add-on), and bringing up a second with a Reverso. But the convenience of bringing only 1 device for lead/second belaying + rappelling and that device even having the safety reserve of semi-auto locking makes i

Backing up the reverso for kids

I mainly use a Petzl Neox, but I've just bought a Mammut Smart 2.0 because they're on offer on Amazon, and wow, it locks up so easily. I've only just got it, but it seems it locks up more easily than either a Gri Gri or a Neox.
