This is an example of why I fully advocate for everyone to have a second system running Linux for any important stuff they do. Redundancy is important anyway, but with OS-breaking bugs like this becoming more frequent with Windows Updates, you really need a second system with an OS which isn't Windo

I just ordered one for my son's X280 from Aliexpress. I'm in France. I'm expecting it next week. I'll keep you posted. I paid around $24 for it, with backlight. Original keyboards are around 3 times that price, so... I hope the quality is good, Lenovo keyboards are great.

As a fellow tech lover and ThinkPad enjoyer, this sounds like a fun little Franken‑laptop project. If you want something inexpensive but still very moddable, I’d look at older T or X series (T480/T490, X270/X280 tier) – they’re common in the refurb market, have plenty of parts available, and tons of

I’d toss up between the T480s and X280, although I’m not sure what other specs they have (display would be my primary concern as the X280 has a much lower base resolution at only 768p.. Some older AMD SKUs may also fall into this margin, these might offer a decent performance point for your stated u

For that price (even w/o storage), this will be a decent (or more than decent) deal in most countries' market. (Adds): If you want thinkpad with upgradable RAM, T14 is probably to go. T14 is a standard (high quality) 14 inch thinkpad line, and its gen2 (2021) was the last gen of the traditional desi

Check Lenovos parts site, they’ve been clearing out old inventory from the repair center I think and some mobos have been popping up ridiculously cheap. I just had an x280 mobo i7 8650 with 16gb ram delivered for $70

i'd grab the 145w dock charger for 25 bucks. the X280 negotiates power draw through the dock anyway - it'll only pull 65w max. having overhead won't hurt. the issue with your current 90w showing 40w sounds like a faulty charger or dock connection. usb-c chargers are more universal but finding a genu

Hmm. To the extent possible I tend to recommend quad-core, 16gb of ram and an SSD as a baseline these days. There are actually X280s with 16GB of ram for under $200, as an example: https://www.ebay.com/itm/366251601380 My Dell comparable was gonna be https://www.ebay.com/itm/236634809523 (1x sodimm
