Regardless if the sound seems flat, the frequency response is far from it. I'm using the DT880s myself and while they're a bit more neutral in this regard, they still benefit from something like CanOpener or SoundID Reference (using the latter).

Unless you are 100% attuned to your headphones, you can't just mix with intuition. If your instinct is out of alignment with the actual sound of your headphones, you'll always have translation problems.
