Yes, they work. I recommend you get one with hall effect/ tmr sticks to have a friend for life (and actually be worth the money) Name brands like gamesir and 8bitdo are the best but some Chinese off brands are surprisingly really really good if you know where to look and have the patience

There are some budget arcade sticks I'm aware of: Hori fighting stick mini, Mayflash F500, 8bitdo arcade stick. I'm not sure how easy they are to mod but they should be decent for under $100.
