Depends on the workload; we don't have a lot of workloads left that call for 2.5" SATA, but (as a business) we'll pay extra now for Kingston DC600 and Solidigm (Intel) D3-series. For actual consumer, WD Blue SA510 is generally okay unless we stumble on an infrequent sale with the WD RED SA500.

If you know that that specific upgrade affects your specific drive and that a firmware upgrade solves the problem, then do so. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother. Ask Woody is a good resource for this.
