Where were you setting the proxy to? I'm in the UK, and use VyprVPN and set it to New York, and had zero adverts.

When I lived in China I used Vypr VPN. It was great. Worked even when others were suppressed. Most of my friends used Express VPN. It was great except for when VPNs were suppressed during political events. I haven't been in a good number of years so there's probably new players in market
