What exactly does intrusion protection actually do? (Technically)

That's actually a really good quetsion. But let's tart at the bginning: What an IDS typically does is to look into the behavious of a host OR the content of packets (deep packet inspection). It checks if the content is suspisious, e.g. by using a list of known patterns how an atack looks OR the behav

Updates Impacting UDM SE Stability?

Latest 5.x releases have memory leaks. Latest 5.0.16 seems to be impacting a lot of folks, see here: https://community.ui.com/releases/UniFi-OS-Dream-Machines-5-0-16/4b8a0a8b-f241-49a0-b0a3-c3de80d503ef?reply=1 Sounds like disabling IDS/IPS might be a good workaround for now … Pretty bad that they r

Is there any reason to buy the Enterprise Fortress Gateway now that the UDM Beast is out?

Hot swappable redundant power supplies and fans, as well as TLS inspection. You could speculate Ubiquiti left out these features intentionally from the Beast to not kill the EFG entirely. It's pretty dead anyways. It's a similar situation as with UCG FIber vs UDM Pro.

Cybersecure vs going direct

I don’t think it’s fair to compare anything Ubiquiti to enterprise equipment. Ubiquiti focuses on ease of use rather than enterprise or even what I would consider “business class” features. In any scenario where a proper firewall is required I wouldn’t even consider the UDM for the reasons you menti

UniFi Dream Machine 7 behind OPNSense appliance.

The issue here is that they are basically the same type of device - router/firewalls. Putting one in front of the other is going to introduce double NAT, two different firewalls, and other complexities you don’t want. You also say you want to run VPN on OPNsense, so that pretty much rules out using

Inherited network in a bad state. which brand do I pick for hardware refresh in my situation?

The Ubiquiti "Dream" Machines are garbage by consumer router standards. They lack basic features like DHCP reservations without jumping thru insane with-will-there-is-a-way hoops. For simple networks the Ubuquiti stacks get the job done and I wish the dream-machine pulled it all together better but th

Customer support experience 2025

My only issue I have had is I can never get mine to connect to WiFi. I have tried creating separate 2.4ghz WiFi and it won’t connect. I have a UniFi dream machine SE with WiFi 6 and 7 APs. Tried non complex passwords, but no dice. It works without a password but I don’t like the idea of a passwordle

Business owner who knows nothing about wifi setups

ok, i got AI to sum it up a bit better, hope this helps to understand why im curious. The PoE Math is Broken (Critical Failure) The tech quoted a UniFi Standard 16 PoE switch to power four U7 Pro XGS access points. The Switch: Total PoE budget is only 42W. The APs: The U7 Pro XGS is a power-hungry W

Are we IPv6 yet?

indeed, i tried it years ago and realized having VLANs and then opening up tons of unicast and multicast firwall holes basically renders them irrelevant from a secuity perspective (and anyond reeading this who wants to argue with me, don't, i don't care about your opinion). and i built this at the t
