A birdie is like a worse grigri by most measures. It weighs 1 ounce more, doesnt feed any better, and doesnt have a progressive lowering handle which makes the lower less smooth. It is cheaper but I would not recommend it or the madrock lifeguard. They are inferior to grigri and its other clones Dep

Get the book “On the Line” by Andy Kirkpatrick. Every device has upsides, drawbacks, and failure mechanisms and that book is as close as there is to a comprehensive guide to TRS. That book unpacks all of those and also describes how to pair them in the way that makes them least likely to interact wi

Trango vergo is SO MUCH BETTER than the grigri IMO. If i had to use a device other than that, I would go for and ATC pilot or something similar

Black diamond Pilot is my favorite, along with the trango Vergo. Highly recommend trying each out if you get the chance!

To the “everyone should know how to use an ATC” crowd. I get it, I’m old too, it is objectively the better feeding and more versatile device. The trango vergo is my overall favorite belay device out of everything that exists.

The only device universally usable for both TRS and belaying I know is Trango Vergo (with one backup device for TRS). It's however quite hard to find it outside of USA.
