How well does a Pi 5 work as a NAS?
Umm I have a Synology DS220J. As a file server it’s so-so. Beyond that, forget it. However an RK3588 is an entirely different animal, pretty close to Intel i5 in terms of capability. WAY better than say N150.

Is Synology still the best choice if you want something that just works?
I personally am not an expert , but can mostly follow YT tutorials to get things working . I bought a DS220j as my first NAS in 2021. At the time it was to setup a doorbell with surveillance... I used it for 3 or 4 months and it worked well. I then got a dedicated DVR system setup and packed the NAS
