Based on your description and my experience: Don’t bother with BSD based software because it just adds overhead since Linux will be a VM. So maybe OVM but not TrueNAS for instance. Is Synology still the best choice if you want something that just works?
I personally am not an expert , but can mostly follow YT tutorials to get things working . I bought a DS220j as my first NAS in 2021. At the time it was to setup a doorbell with surveillance... I used it for 3 or 4 months and it worked well. I then got a dedicated DVR system setup and packed the NAS
