I switched from a DS1522+ to a Ugreen 4800plus running Unraid, and I can’t say I miss anything. Once you get past the small learning curve, it’s perfectly fine. Another option would be ARC Loader with Xpenology. I tested that before Unraid, and it worked perfectly. I’m not sure about the backup prog

i was in this same spot last year. what clicked for me was building around a SilverStone DS380B - it's 8-bay hotswap in a compact case that fits nicely on a shelf or even a 10" rack with adapters. got the DIY tinkering without the full sheet metal headache. if you lean pre-built though the Synology
