pixel area almost doesn't matter, sensor technology matters way way way more that's why 48mpx sony a7s iii can be marketed as 12 and people don't care (it's using quad bayer, like phones, but advertises resolution after downsampling, since you can't pull full res photos from it)... and also why sony

Keep DSLR or upgrade to mirrorless for kid and family photography?

Another fun example of this , the Sony A99ii has the exact same 42 megapixel sensor as the A7R2. This means the A7, A7ii, A9 and A9ii all have a worse sensor than the last Sony DSLR.
