They are not picky about SSD brand. Just get 500GB to stay away from the 1 TB limit. I used PNY CS900 500GB. If it has not been done, I would replace the battery while you're at it.

These hp laptops from that generation are so nice to work on. I had some success with ide2sat2 and PNY CS900 SATA SSDs. I think the Samsung ones work fairly well too with that adapter.

It was the SSD. I was using a Crucial BX500 and I found another post of a guy with the same setup having the same issue. For whatever reason, the SSD is completely functional, its just not compatible with OPL. I swapped it out with a PNY CS900 and it works fine now.
