NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5050 announced with 8GB GDDR6, $249 price, launching mid-to-late July
Low profile, no external power and single slot would be awesome for a Minisforum ms-01 or ms-a2, but I guess we're stuck with Frankenstein cards if we really want that.

I documented the most common Proxmox mistakes I made (so you don't have to)
And I thought I was paranoid, when I replaced the external PSUs of 4 Minisforum MS-01 with something better the moment I got them. (this also means I have the original PSUs as spares if one dies).

Recommendation for Proxmox Server
Minisforum MS-01 Why this over the MS-A2? This has intel iGPU great for plex emby etc. Also you can use SR-IOV and slice the iGPU up and pass a slices to different VMs. You can do this with the AMD iGPU. I this box you get 3xNVMe 2xSFP+ Low profile PCIe slot (great for small gpu or HBA and run a who

Thinking about buying GMKtec Mini PC Workstation (i9-13900HK, 64 GB DDR5, 1 TB SSD) — anyone here own it / return it? Thoughts?
Not sure how the thermal and noise but spoiler -> some harsh words below~ Looks to me It's cheaper Minisforum MS-01 copy but lacking all those criteria that makes MS-01 an MS-01. Too many I/Os has been skimmed off to the point that it has no advantage over an cube size Mini PC. You can easily find a

Do people here love over-engineering their self-hosting setups?
My minisforum ms-01 can do all that. And more powerful. If you get a MINISFORUM N5 Pro AI NAS you can replace your PC and NAS all in one.

Is it wise to spend 600-900$ on a build for my beginner stage?
Forget local LLMs for the time being unless you want to experiment with a Strix Halo mini pc and that’s gonna cost you a lot more (minimum 2K). If you want to do LLMs with an Nvidia GPU, you need to spend far more than that just to match the VRAM (albeit faster than Strix Halo, which is still faster

hardware for self made firewall
Get a minisforum MS-01/02 it has 2 x 10gb (X710)sftp ports, and 2x 2.5 gbit utp. You can get with intel(01) or AMD (02) cpu's. It's small and performs perfectly. Only the battery fails after some time, so when it does not boot anymore. Just replace the battery, 3 min work. I use opnsense on proxmox.

Made up to see the £499 tumble dryer I've been eyeing up on "sale" with £200 off! Just a shame that is actually £479 now - thanks Currys!
Keep an eye on r/homelabsales and r/hardwareswapuk if you’re not already, they usually go cheap. Or, if you fancy treating yourself for Christmas, I got a minisforum MS-01 a while back and it’s been great.

What to do with a Dell PowerEdge R720?
To each their own. I'm not in Europe. I'd run this server all day if it was my entry point to selfhosting. I'd happily pay $42/mo in power to offset the costs of streaming solutions alone and then migrate to more power effective solutions over the course of time. Further, hardware prices are prepost
