Firstly, I’m sorry for your loss. I sincerely hope you’re able to make a home yourself for as much of this equipment as possible. The Mackie HR824 powered speakers, for example, are some of the best ever released in that price range — easy on the ears, bass is low and tight, plenty detailed enough.

Editors, What kind of speakers are you using to mix audio with.
I still use mackie hr824’s (mk 1’s) with everything set flat. I’ve used them for years and when I have to mix in house, even for broadcast, I’ve never had a mix kicked back. You can find them used in your price range.
