I think that what you've read is overblown, or it's due to users not matching components with specifications. I'm a consultant and I've set up clients with several different 4K monitors, and they all look great. Not at all like any kind of a compromise. You may want to play with the Finder settings

I had the same problem on my Mac mini M4 recently when I bought a new 4k monitor - You need to be using a USB-C to DisplayPort cable as if you are using an HDMI cable the Mac will simply assume this is a TV and only give those resolutions. Once I changed the cable and with the use of BetterDisplay s

HDMI 2.1 (i.e. with FRL signalling) is completely unusable for me on the GP27U - none of the firmware fixed it, and in the end I had to use an EDID override to disable FRL and force TMDS, but that means you're limited to HDMI 2.0 resolutions/refresh. Since switching to DisplayPort, on firmware 1.4.5

Usb c is nice to have honestly but i'd personally not pick a worse monitor just for that. I use a hub like this with my macbook and keep it on charge when i dont want a second screen. A wire has to run from your laptop to your screen regardless, whether its a hdmi or usb c. You'll have an hdmi runni
