Just as a general statement I'd say don't go any older than a Sandy Bridge Intel 2nd Gen CPU. That leaves you starting with an X220/T420/W520 and upward from there. They run Linux beautifully. Yes, they had real issues with power when they were trying to charge the battery and work at the some time. Throttling like crazy. I do a shit load of circuit TTUs and console work and I still use an old T430s with a 3rd gen i7 (I have quite a collection of IBM/Lenovo ThinkPads). I'm restricted to circuits up to 5Gbps due to the machine only having USB3.0 ports but it gets the job done. Only other issue is finding good genuine
