What is the absolute best budget e-reader by tier? Looking for the "cheapest you'd actually recommend"

Not sure why people rave about the Xteink X4. It's an interesting enthusiast's device, but it doesn't even have a frontlight. I wouldn't recommend it as Baby's First E-Reader. Clara BW is a really great choice for the price. You can get a GlowLight 4 used for a really great price, but you have to tw

best non-kindle ereaders?

Kobo is your best bet! I have the Clara BW and the Libra Color. The Clara is very portable, I always take it out the house with me. The BW definitely has more contrast and is more clear compared to the color e-ink screen. I notice the difference but it's never bothered me or affected my reading expe

To those who haven't bought a light for their Xteink device

If you are serious enough in reading, i’d suggest investing in a kobo clara B&W for night reading and the x4 during the day anywhere. Nothing beats a frontlight of ereaders as it is not distracting even if someone sleeps with you in bed

Wanted to buy a reader that could use Libby app from NLB. Is Kobo ok? What else works for you?

I have the Kobo Clara B&W. I bought this specifically to read NLB books. They work very well. However, personally I still prefer the Kindle Paperwhite (epubs and azw) or my iPad Mini (Kindle and Libby). Somehow to me, the UI and fonts/presentation are more pleasant. As a result, the Kobo is now not

Long time e-reader user. I’m disappointed with a modern device

From what I’ve read is that Pocketbook is sub subpar compared to Kobo and Boox. I would be very careful drawing such drastic conclusions that modern e-readers are worse than older ones based on your two only ereaders… I have Kobos (Libra Colour, Clara B&W and Elipsa 2E) and all of them are snappy an

My Kindle is an ad filled wasteland and I regret buying it.

I didn’t know about this at all. I just load ebooks on to my Clara BW, over USB from Calibre, and they appear under My Books. You probably don’t need Calibre, just connecting the Kobo like an external disk and copying ePub files works too. When I disconnect, it imports the ePubs to My Books.

Unpopular opinion on the kindle or kobo debate

It all comes down to ethics in my mind. Amazon is the classic example of monopoly practice ... sell cheap, put the big bookstores out of commission (ppl sort of forget about Barnes and Noble and the others) .. then tout your high sales to get authors to sign exclusives .. then jack up the price. The

Ereader Recs - Dumb it down for me

I'm in a similar-ish position, and I went with the Kobo Clara BW. It allows side-loading of ebooks, so if you buy books from somewhere other than Kobo you can still read them on it. I also considered colour, but I just want to read books not comics, and from what I heard the b&w e-ink looks sharper

Can you borrow e books from the Winnipeg library e readers?

I have a Kobo (specifically the Clara HD model, the closest equivalent to what they currently sell would be Clara BW). I’ve had it for YEARS, and I love it. The battery lasts forever , it’s a great size (small enough to fit tucked in a purse for travelling), and yes much better than reading from you
