Yea £8 is very unlikely to hack it. You can probably still get a kingrinder P2 from Ali express etc for a bit under £25 that will do reasonable espresso. That's about as cheap as is viable to go I think.

Even cheaper is a kingrinder P1 or P2 (as the P1 is OOS everywhere) Both can do espresso for 30 or 40 quid

You have done the preliminary research & you are on track. If you can afford, get a temperature probe along with that. (not the Rs 200 ones) Also, french press is just the beginning, so don't invest much on it. Try the Hoffman FP method & then the lance Hedrick method to bridge to Aeropress or Pouro
