It depends on the ERA and the model. The current JBL M2 is undeniably excellent. Some of us love our Circa 1980s white woofers. I now use JBL 708p monitors and could afford most anything.

I had some Shape 65's for years and they were great to mix on, definitely needed a sub though. Upgraded to JBL 708p's.

Will they move to another room, go into storage or out to resell? I'm reasonably happy with my JBL 708P - but they require a sub.

Are we putting the cart before the horse? Modern controlled directivity designs might not have much trouble with that ledge. Pros love these. If they sound good to you, grab them. Honorable mentions: jbl 705p and 708p though I’ve heard they have driver failures if they’re placed at the wrong angle. Anyone else hear this?

Did you know JBL makes reference monitors? A 708p is $3500 and a 705p is $2000 for a single speaker. That’s Genelec prices. I know that’s not in your budget but I just installed some of these JBL’s. A stereo pair will kick you physically.
