Training gut for higher fuel intake

Have you considered ditching syrup for a liquid high carb drink mix? On my weekend 2.5 hour long run I took two 500mL soft flasks: one was 6 scoops of GU Roctane powder (about 177g of carbs and 105mg caffeine total) dissolved in 500mL of water, and the other was just water. The drink mix was not thi

Favorite gels

Have you considered using a high carb drink mix instead? I make 90-120g mixes with Formula123 or GU Roctane powders, add a bit more electrolytes to balance the sweetness, and away I go. They dissolve easily, and will save you a couple dollars per gel. Doesn't have that thick gel or Maurten gloopy te

Favorite non-gel race fuels

I really like high carb drink mixes like Formula369, GU Roctane, etc. Can easily get 180g of carbs in 500mL of water. Probably way more. Still drinks like liquid instead of thick like gel.

Completed my first xc race today need, looking for some tips.

You can train what's called repeatability. Basically you do reasonably short intervals a good number of times, ideally with limited rest and tailored to the next racecourse. If you're new, you should see big gains reasonably quickly doing 2 interval sessions a week for 4 weeks, with a plateau after

Constant GI issues

Are you drinking any water on your runs? It sounds like no. Gels will pull water into your gut and can cause cramping, bloating, nausea, diarrhea, etc. I switched to high carb drink mix instead and have zero discomfort. I am now up to 80g/hour of either GU Roctane (with caffeine) or Formula369 (with

A couple q's before race day

I used gu roctane for my first half and then bought ingredients on amazon to customize it slightly for my second and training. My dad who has done a bunch of fulls uses gu and hammer drink mix. Whatever tastes good and works for your stomach tbh.

112 mile fueling

Just seeing that OP is still in high school. You’re going to want at least 50-100 grams of carbs per hour. If you were just doing the ride, 50 would usually be enough, but since in the race, you’ll have a whole marathon after the ride, you need to use the ride to overfuel so you’ve got energy for th

Your favorite electrolyte mix for racing that's not too sweet?

I’m a big fan of Gu Roctane drink mix in the strawberry hibiscus flavor. The tartness of the hibiscus means it’s not too sweet. Somehow I never get sick of it even after using it as my main source of carbs for hours late in races. And I usually get sick of things quickly!

Way under fueling?

Drink your carbs! Skratch High Carb drink mix (50g carbs /200 cal) or Gu Roctane Energy drink mix (59g carbs / 250 cal). I like the Gu drink mix bc it also has caffeine and additional calories. Easier to drink the carbs than having gels so frequently.

Thoughts on Hyperlyte?

Hyperlyte is pretty good but I don't think it is flavored (at the bags I bought weren't). It's pretty much just maltodextrin, fructose, and sodium so it kind of tastes like maltodextrin. Similarly, The Feed brand high carb mix tastes like maltodextrin. GU Roctane grape and summit tea (caffeinated) a
