This is probably my biggest complaint about the app, and I’ve commented on it here several times before. Simply knowing whether or not the dog is with you should only require a Bluetooth connection to the collar, not location. The walk tracking feature needs location since it uses the phone for that

The post above explains it. The fi collar is designed to last for weeks/months that is why it updates less. Until you put it in lost dog mode. If you want second by second updates there are collars for that but they are huge and have to be charged every day or two.

Fi’s advantage is that it’s the size of the buckle on the collar and the battery lasts for weeks. Most dogs go on personal quests exactly when you least expect it (you now know that). Because the Fi collar is on 24/7 they can be easily found when that happens.

When we used them, the dogs just had two collars. One for the Fi, one for the leash. Fi collar stayed on all the time, leash collar stayed with the leash. Got to be a pain to constantly charge the Fi so we stopped using them. Dogs never go anywhere anyways.
