I’ve adopted a similar strategy with the Cotopaxi Allpa 50 Adventure. 42L main body. Top comes off for an 8L sling. Backpacking style harness system for comfort.

Best BagPacks for JLTG - please recommend some
The Jet Lag boys use Cotopaxi Allpa 35L backpacks (and in this latest season, Sam is using the new Cotopaxi Allpa 50L Adventure Travel Pack.) FYI both of these are pretty large to carry around for full days. I have the Allpa 28L and bring it as my only bag for trips of 1-2 weeks (it can fit a lot!)
