What's the best mini PC for basic office productivity for around $500-700 USD?
This at $340 is more than plenty for basic office computing. Beelink Ser5 Max The non-Max version would work as well at $280. Beelink Ser5 Edit: my bad, just saw the 1tb requirement. Those Beelinks above have a second ssd slot that you could add more storage with. Something like this would work. GMK

F* this... Anything I should know before hopping?
You have no idea how true this is. I discovered Linux in the very early days (around 1992) when it was on version 0.93b or something ancient. Tarballs and a shell. No windowing, DEs or anything. A true learning experience because you often had to find your own way. The Internet resource back then wa

PC Recommendations?
ABSOLUTELY LOVE my Beelink SER5 MAX. The Ryzen 7 5800H is PLENTY fast for my taste. Then, once I upgraded the RAM from 16GB to 32GB - Now this puppy SCREAMS! I highly advise you to at least look into them. I've never had one problem - well, only something very minor that was actually my fault: and I

What is considered the cheapest mini pc for linux/emulation?
I use a Beelink mini-PC as an everyday system. I believe they use AMD Raedon and Ryzen chips in most systems. I have an SER5 with 32 GB, 1 TB NVME and a load of connection options. I run Debian 13 (Trixie) with KDE and it kills. I don't use this as an NAS (I have a Synology device for that), but you

10 year old Desktop Broke - Need Mini PC reocmmendation
I'd go with the Beelink SER5 MAX. It's $339. It has soldered on ram through so it's not upgradable but it's 24 GB vs. the 8 GB you had. It has 8 cores and 16 threads so it's many times faster than your old PC. You could argue it might be overkill, but it should be a good PC for years to come.

Emulation Station - Good Choice? Help!
Take a look at the beelink Ser5 max. Slightly cheaper, nearly identical CPU, but with 24 GB LPDDR5 which is not upgradable but is actually slightly faster.

post-installation debian
I recently did two fresh Debian installations. One was for a brand new Beelink SER5 mini-pc. The second was on a 2015-vintage Macbook Air. (The MacOS was grindingly slow, so it was time). Both installs went smoothly. The one issue I had with the Air was wireless drivers, and it took a bit of work to
