As long as you are ok sticking with indie PC games then an Android is a good pick. I would suggest the AYN Thor Pro since it's the easiest to travel with. If you don't care about dual screens for DS/3DS or clamshell then the Retroid Pocket 6 is a good option for cheaper.

Ayn Thor Pro because it's portable enough. At home I add grips. For retro only, I use the rp flip 2, I prefer it because the Thor is too heavy compared to the flip 2. For long sessions, weight makes a lot of difference.
