The lan wifi is horrible. I connected an old asus ac68u and have much better .... lan activity. I just upgrade from the sagecom to the g5ar and the local lan is to say the least.. a cluster fuck. The wan speeds are faster to the tmo internet... but after a week of lan work with the g5ar I am having

It is likely a better main router than the old Rt-AC68U, and still being supported more actively in terms of development of the software, not just security fixes.

TL;DR: Since you stated you need Adaptive QoS, then you should probably leave the RT-AC68U as the router, add the RT-AX55 as a mesh node and call it a day. I had an AC68U running Merlin and had no issues hitting gigabit speeds on 1gig symmetrical fiber. I disabled the AP function on it and used an Omada EAP670 for better coverage in my house. You really should consider upgrading as both Asus and Merlin no longer offer security updates for this router.
