People often say "Linux is only for tinkerers", but in my experience (across several computers) a distro like Mint basically solves that.
If you don't install it on the newest possible hardware, it works flawlessly. Especially I love the way Linux Mint treats printers. Linux is not perfect for cutting-edge consumer hardware.
