Microsoft Says 'We're Faster Than a Mac' in Latest Windows PC Ad
lol faster than M3 air they claim. But, with a fan, ad and spyware riddled OS, and 20% less battery life. Add a fan to the M3 in the form of the MacBook Pro and it's 31% faster than the X Elite and consumes 20% less power. The M4 smokes it even more. Qualcomm really dropped the ball.

Entering PhD this fall. Budget of $600- should I go with MacBook Neo or something else?
It will work but R is memory hungry. Look for a used / Refurbished Air with 16GB RAM. Apple has it for 750, you can find an M3 Air for about $600 on eBay if you look carefully. You can also add AppleCare to one of those for piece of mind.
