What exactly does intrusion protection actually do? (Technically)
That's actually a really good quetsion. But let's tart at the bginning: What an IDS typically does is to look into the behavious of a host OR the content of packets (deep packet inspection). It checks if the content is suspisious, e.g. by using a list of known patterns how an atack looks OR the behav

UNAS 4 - MARCH 2026 - PART II... yeah, theres more. it's the hardware too....
Great in-depth review as I think a write up like this may have had me hold off on my unas2 purchase. However, what this NAS has in lack of features can make up for in what you plan on using it for. (Give and take) My problems with ubiquiti at the moment is that they don't just make a great all aroun

UDM Beast – PPPoE Performance & Hardware Offloading? Any real-world data yet?
i feel you on pppoe pain - my udm pro capped at 2gbps too. the missing hardware offloading toggle in beast screenshots is worrying. ubiquiti has a history of software pppoe crushing cpus. since you already get 5-6gbps on ucg fiber with ids/ips, i'd wait a month for real reviews from european users.

Unpopular opinion: The UDM Beast isn't overkill, it's the ideal homelab router.
It’s great if you want a all in one device, I’m sure ! I’ve started to struggle with UDM-PRO performance, after getting an ISP service of 2.5GBps. So I’ve stopped using the 8 port switch completely, and I’ve moved UniFi Protect to a UNVR, moved switching to separate switch (2.5g / 10g) just to make

bad situation ever! UDMpro wipped itself
If you did not back up your UDM then you are SOL. The AP's are tied to the software configuration, not the hardware itself. You can, for example, back up the config on one UDM, take out the hardware, restore the backup to a completely different UDM, and the AP's and everything adopted in that config

WireGuard Server MTU can't be changed - "Unable to apply the changes"
ran into this on a udm pro. the ui wont let you change mtu with active clients - dumb design honestly. workaround is to delete the client configs temporarily, change the mtu, then recreate them. or ssh in and edit the wireguard config file directly under /etc/wireguard. the json override method work

Spectrum voice troubles
i feel you on rural isp hell. starlink as failover works well - i've set it up on a udm pro with dual wan. for voice though don't jump straight to unifi talk unless you want to be their beta tester. honestly port your numbers to a real voip provider like nextiva or ringcentral and let them handle th

Cybersecure vs going direct
I don’t think it’s fair to compare anything Ubiquiti to enterprise equipment. Ubiquiti focuses on ease of use rather than enterprise or even what I would consider “business class” features. In any scenario where a proper firewall is required I wouldn’t even consider the UDM for the reasons you menti

UPS 2U vs Eaton 5PX
My honest opinion would be that Ubiquiti have succeeded in turning a simple and reliable product (a dumb UPS) into something that is now massively overcomplicated, unreliable, buggy and yet works in a very limited and constrained way (ie. shut everything down after 10 seconds) which can't be changed
