Top Rope Solo options

Get the book “On the Line” by Andy Kirkpatrick. Every device has upsides, drawbacks, and failure mechanisms and that book is as close as there is to a comprehensive guide to TRS. That book unpacks all of those and also describes how to pair them in the way that makes them least likely to interact wi

Assisted belay device

Grigri is the most versatile and will be super-reliable. Some devices are better for certain niches (e.g. the Neox pays out slack more smoothly for sport + gym climbing, the Trango Vergo has less drag for TRS, etc.) but in terms of an all-around device that is very good at almost everything it’s har

Belay device recs

Trango vergo is SO MUCH BETTER than the grigri IMO. If i had to use a device other than that, I would go for and ATC pilot or something similar

Anybody using Beal Birdie for lead climbing? What’s your thoughts?

Black diamond Pilot is my favorite, along with the trango Vergo. Highly recommend trying each out if you get the chance!

Saddle Hunters

The device you need for the ability to rappel is called a trango vergo, Madrock (hard to find), or a petzl gri gri +. Make sure you get large enough rope (9mm or bigger usually) to fit the specs. I run a trango vergo on a small bridge, then a longer bridge to a longhorn agile knot. Basically running

Grigri or Birdie ? (mainly for rope solo)

I think they meant lead solo based on the devices they showed. If we're talking TRS my setup of choice is Trango Vergo over CT Roll N Lock. Pretty similar to yours actually

Black Diamond ATC Pilot or Gri Gri for a beginner?

To the “everyone should know how to use an ATC” crowd. I get it, I’m old too, it is objectively the better feeding and more versatile device. It’s also usually not allowed at most gyms, and this person is going to be learning at a gym…IMO that’s a good thing. Whether or not gyms should be teaching w

Belay device recs

I don’t like the GG either. I own one…and never use it. The Trango Vergo uses a different technique that you need to get used to, but it lead belays really smooth. I think the Vergo is the better ABD compared to the GG, hands down. Gym: MegaJul (my gym only allows 3 devices) Outdoor: Vergo/GigaJul

Rappelling tips.

Madrocks can be hard to find (or at least have been last few months) I have a trango vergo and really like it. Mechanical is the most straightforward way to go, but if cost was an issue, no reason you can’t safely do it with a munter and a friction hitch. That particular hitch (longhorn agile) could
