The TP-Link AX1500 travel router only has a USB 2.0 port, hence the drop in speed I suppose. Would need a travel router with USB 3.0 port to get the max possible speeds.

What's your travel-trick that improves your quality of life on the road/in hotels?
FYI this is what I recently purchased. I had a simpler one before but it only did 2.4GHz and was super fiddly to change modes. This one works magnficently: https://www.tp-link.com/us/home-networking/wifi-router/tl-wr1502x/
